Skin Cancer Prevention

The Summer months are a great time of year to spend outdoors in the sun with family and friends. They are also an important time of year to think about your skin! Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States affecting millions of people yearly. In fact 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Sun exposure is the most important preventable risk factor, so wear sunscreen! It is also wise to see a doctor for a skin check, especially if you notice any abnormal moles, rashes, freckles, or growths. Here is a helpful way to determine which skin growths may be concerning:

A: Asymmetry – one half is unlike the other half
B: Border – irregular or poorly-defined border
C: Color – different shades in the lesion. Combinations of brown, tan, black, blue, red, or white.
D: Diameter – greater than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser) is more concerning for skin cancer
E: Evolving – it is changing in size, shape, or color, or it is different than the rest of the surrounding ones.
